Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how Teers ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Teers mobile application (the "App"). By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
1. Information We Collect
Information You Provide

Account information. When you sign up, we collect your email address and a password. You may also provide a display name, username, profile photo, golf handicap, and other profile details.

Phone number. During sign-up we ask for your phone number so friends who import their contacts can find you and so we can notify you when someone in your contacts joins Teers. We store only a one-way SHA-256 hash of your number (in E.164 form) — your raw number is never stored on our servers. Providing it is optional; you can skip during onboarding and add it later via Settings.

Course rankings and reviews. Courses you rank, scores you give, sentiments (great/alright/bad), tag selections (greens, condition, layout, pace, difficulty, scenery, value), strokes shot, dates played, and any written reviews or notes.

Photos. Photos you attach to a course ranking.

Friends and groups. People you follow, group memberships, group names, group cover and logo images.

Communications. Comments and reactions on others' posts.

Contacts (when you import them). If you tap "Find friends from contacts" and grant the iOS contacts permission, your contacts' phone numbers are read on your device, normalized, and one-way SHA-256 hashed. Only the hashes are sent to us — we never see or store your contacts' names, raw numbers, emails, or anything else. Hashes are stored only to match you with existing Teers users and to notify you when someone in your contacts later joins Teers. You can revoke the contacts permission at any time in iOS Settings; revoking will stop future matching and notifications.
Information Collected Automatically
- Device information. Device type, operating system version, app version.
- Push notification tokens. A unique device token used to deliver push notifications, if you opt in.
- Approximate location. With your permission, the device's approximate location is used to show nearby golf courses. Location is not stored on our servers; it is used in real time to query nearby courses and discarded.
- Usage data. If we use analytics tools (e.g., Mixpanel), we may record events such as screens viewed and buttons tapped, associated with your user ID.
Information from Third Parties
- Google Places. We use Google Places to enrich course information (photos, hours, ratings). No personal information about you is sent to Google.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information described above to:
- Operate the App and provide its core functionality (rankings, social features, course data).
- Send push notifications you've opted into.
- Surface course recommendations based on your ranked courses and the rest of the Teers community.
- Match you with friends from your contacts who are already on Teers, and notify you when a contact later joins.
- Enforce our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
- Communicate with you about the service (account-related notices, occasional updates).
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your data for advertising or share it with advertisers.
We do not share phone-number hashes or contact-hash data with any third party. These are used only inside Teers to power the contact-matching feature.
3. How Information Is Shared
- With other Teers users. Your display name, username, profile photo, and rankings are visible to friends you've connected with and to members of groups you join.
- With service providers. Backend infrastructure is hosted on Supabase. Push notifications are routed through Apple Push Notification service and Expo. These providers process data only as needed to deliver the service.
- For legal reasons. If required by law (subpoena, court order), we may disclose data. We will give you notice unless legally prohibited.
- In a sale or merger. If Teers is acquired, your data may transfer to the new entity, subject to this policy.
4. Data Retention
- Account data is retained as long as your account is active.
- Deleted account. When you delete your account in-app (Settings → Delete Account), your profile, rankings, photos, group memberships, follows, and reactions are permanently removed within 30 days. Some anonymized aggregate data (e.g., a course's community average) may persist without identifying you.
- Backups. Data may persist in encrypted backups for up to 30 days after deletion before being purged on the standard backup retention schedule.
5. Your Rights
You can:
- Access your data by viewing it inside the App.
- Edit profile fields, change rankings, or delete posts.
- Delete your account in-app at any time (Settings → Delete Account).
- Export your rankings by emailing us at aidschw@gmail.com — we'll provide a copy of your data.
If you live in California (CCPA), the EU (GDPR), or another jurisdiction with applicable privacy laws, you have additional rights including the right to request deletion, correction, and a copy of your personal information. Contact aidschw@gmail.com to exercise these rights.
6. Children's Privacy
Teers is not intended for users under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected such information, contact aidschw@gmail.com and we will delete it.
7. Security
We use industry-standard technical and organizational safeguards (encrypted database, transport-layer encryption, row-level security on user data). No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy. Material changes will be communicated through the App or by email. Your continued use of Teers after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
